The facilitators for this presentation were Peggy Roche, Catherine Fagan and Marie Raymond. Life Member Catherine Power also did a reading. The program was held from 1:30 to 3:30 pm and after the program, there was a social. The members enjoyed the afternoon and the Life Members involved stated that they will continue with this program.

“Pillowcase Dresses”

CWL  members make dresses from pillowcases to be sent to children in less fortunate countries.

In order to begin this project, a sample dress was made and placed on display at the Parish weekend mass where parishioners were asked if they would like to donate pillowcases for this project. Parishioners not only donated the pillowcases but some volunteer to join the group creating these dresses.

Once a week, the sewing group gathered at one of the CWL member’s homes. Everybody gets a job, whether it is cutting, ironing, pinning or sewing – it all needs to be done.

The Archdiocese of St. John’s mission parish in Monsefu, Peru are celebrating their 50th anniversary this fall. The Sisters of Mercy and some of the priests are returning there for the celebrations and have agreed to take the dresses with them!

God does indeed work in mysterious ways.

Congratulations to Mary  Skinner of St. Patrick's council, St. John's who received the Bellelle Guerin Award in December 2010. Mary was one of the founding members of the League in 1980 and continues to be an active member of the council 30 years later. Mary is well known and highly respected within the Council and Parish. She is always front and centre with all Catholic Women's League activities. She oftentimes acts as a consultant to new Executives and gladly imparts her years of experience and vast knowledge on others. She is also a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. Mary is a role model and mentor, who inspires others to be "Women of Hope." It certainly gave our council great pride to have her leadership and dedication further acknowledged by awarding Mary Skinner the Bellelle Guerin Award.
